Podcast Bio

Just where and when (and, I suppose, why) this Podcast came to be

The Let The Wookie Win podcast first started life as two episodes, recorded on a whim, at Paul and Euan's flat on Paul's Macbook. They can be found here, and while unstructured and slightly more random than would be allowed on the radio, they were much the same as the later podcasts, at least sense of humour wise. These podcasts were the next in a long line of recordings (found here), but the first to feature Paul, Euan, and Bob together.

Not long after this Sam Gray, the then station manager of Discover Radio, heard these early attempts, and offered us a weekly radio show. We started our slot, tentatively titled "Let The Wookie Win", in late January, 2011. Going live every Thursday from 5-6pm, we were forced out of necessity to learn the value of jingles, structure, and restraint. We started recording the shows originally for our own personal use, but hit upon the idea to release the recordings as a weekly podcast. The unedited recordings of the radio show can be heard here, however these were both too long and infringed copyright, and as such needed to be heavily edited to meet iTunes criteria. These edited half hour versions, minus songs and mistakes, became Series 1 of the Let The Wookie Win Podcast.

As the first series of the radio show finished, and Discover Radio closed for the summer, we decided to continue recording the podcasts weekly, keeping much the same structure and content. However, not having to record the episodes live was a great advantage, as the power of editing meant we could record under less pressure. After briefly using Paul or Euan's Macbooks for recording, we eventually secured use of the Discover Radio Studio over the summer, and did so for the rest of series 3.

Onto series 4, we went back to broadcasting live on Discover Radio, at the slightly later slot of 6-7pm, every Thursday. We took our first real break over the Christmas period of 2011, before returning to Discover Radio and series 5 of the LTWW Podcast, which is currently running.

Credits

We record the Let The Wookie Win Podcast using the Discover Radio Studio, situated in the University of Dundee student Union, using Behringer mixers and Rode microphones.

Otherwise, on rare occasions, we have used Macbooks (internal microphone).

All audio is recorded into and edited using Audacity, a freeware audio editor.

Jingles have used samples from David Bowie, Tenacious D, Koji Kondo, and LucasHeil.com (among others). The current music used for jingles is an edited and remixed version of "College Rock (How To Hold The Guitar Right)" by Man bites Dog, used under the creative commons license*. Voiceovers are done mostly by Jess Johnstone.

All audio is mixed, edited, and produced by Daniel "Bob" Taylor.

The Let The Wookie Win Podcast is written and performed by Paul McCallum, Daniel "Bob" Taylor, and Euan Menzies, and is an LTWW Production. All content is self hosted.
